Are you just done with Christmas shopping and realised that you also need a plan for New Year? Well, ignore all those annoying people who planned their parties 6 months ago. There are still plenty of options in Frankfurt. I’m only listing options that go past midnight, otherwise it is just a regular dinner out.
But let’s now examine the contents of your wallet. New Year (or Silvester in Germany) can be a pricey affair in Germany’s financial capital. So I have three categories: 1) free and on the street, 2) rich and posh 3) budget/stingy:
On the streets!
The obvious way to go is outdoor. If you aren’t blessed with a roof top terrace or a balcony viewing the river then you need to know where to go to get a good view of the official firework display. Take a bottle of something fizzy, some plastic glasses and head on down to the river. There will be some 30,000 other people attending and heavy security manning a security zone. You need to get yourself an unobstructed view of the city skyline so the best spot is on the Eisener Steg (the old iron bridge). Realistically though, everyone heads here so you aren’t going to want to go early enough to get a spot, so south side of the river is also good.
Alternatively, you can also aim for one of the large open spaces inside the city, but your neck will ache from staring up the whole evening. Possible spots will be Opernplatz, Willy Brand Platz, Römerberg, and Zeil or Goetheplatz. Views will be slightly restricted in each place though and it will be busy.
Safety is definitely an issue at all of these locations. Personal fireworks are now banned and police are trying to clamp down on this but there is a lot of anti-social behaviour and people letting of fireworks in crowded spaces, even targeting each other. It can be a smokey mayhem in some streets.
Big budgets
I almost said unlimited, but let’s keep it reasonable. If you really have no limit, then get in touch and I will come up with a great plan for you! In the meantime, there are some reasonably good evenings to be had that still have spaces available:
NFT Skybar – offering really great views over the city and right on top of the firework display. The basic tickets come in at €350 which includes drinks, but no meal. Some snacks are included. There is a buffet on the 1st floor for an extra €59. Just a shame that there is no dress code.
Blasky – for €298 you can have a 5 course meal and drinks all night (from a limited selection). And there is a formal dress code. Really looks good and definitely the right
Alex – not really that expensive to be honest! For €150 a head, you have an unlimited buffet, all you can drink from a restricted drinks menu, a dance floor and a rooftop terrace on top of the Skyline Plaza with good views (but not perfect) of the city and the fireworks.
Smaller budgets
No shame in being sensible! There are a bunch of good options still:
New Year Masquerade – for €74 you can take part in this party at Neue Kaiser on Kaiserstrasse. No views of the fireworks, but a formal dress event with masks (non-mandatory). No food included.
New Era Club – this is a fun option, for only €30 entry. Its actually an Indian community club which normally hosts festivals and weddings, but they have a 400 capacity rooftop with perfect view of the city skyline and fireworks. If you don’t mind the slightly home-made vibe, then this will be an amaying evening!
Singles walk Lohrberg – another fun idea. For €29, singles between 30 – 49 can go on a walk together and finish on top of the Lohrberg hill just outside Frankfurt to watch the fireworks from a distance. Includes a glass of Sekt. Take a coat and sensible shoes though! Not real hiking though. The walk finishes at the Schöneausicht Restaurant and a full meal is available for €39.
Batschkapp – huge party venue that runs music and dance events all year round. For €15 you can still get entry but nothing else included but a good time. You won’t see any fireworks here but it will probably won’t matter ;). Easy access with the U4 and U7. If you want a taxi back afterwards though, you could be waiting a very long time…
If I missed something good, then let me know!
Happy partying!
